HS2 minister Huw Merriman today became the first person to officially walk on top of the UK’s longest railway bridge, which is under construction at an HS2 site just outside London.

Ten formerly unemployed London residents are starting the new year having secured full-time jobs helping to build HS2, Britain’s new zero carbon railway.

• HS2 is hosting over 20 events on some of its busiest construction sites as part of Build UK’s ‘Open Doors 2023’ programme.
• The site visits give young people and career changers an opportunity to see behind the hoardings and consider a career in construction.

University students who live, or study, in the Midlands are being offered the chance to join HS2’s construction partner Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) on an eight-week paid work placement this summer.

An aspiring engineer from Nigeria is climbing the career ladder and helping to build Britain’s new railway after being handed a one-off opportunity by Bachy Soletanche, a specialist geotechnics contractor working on HS2, with Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering.
